About Bret

Hi folks,

Welcome to Cancercrooner.com. My name is Bret Martin and I have just finished six months of chemotherapy after having my colon removed for colon cancer. I had an ileostomy that turned out to be successfully reversed and I now am cancerless, bagless, bloodclotless and reborn.

I started writing these songs midway through chemotherapy to broach the myriad of taboos around cancer as well as all the issues of ego and humility surrounding an ileostomy.

I hope that listening to these songs can provide as much therapy for you and your loved ones as writing them has provided for me.

I would like to acknowledge three people for helping make this album far better than it ever would have been without them,

Although Robin Eschner was terribly busy in her creative life (i.e., the Occidental choir)Art shows musical shows, not to mention her impending wedding to Bill, she took time out to listen to my latest song each week or so and tell me and show me where I had succeeded and where I needed to go back to the drawing board. Robin even took a couple of songs overnight for sleepovers where they came back smarter and surprisingly well rested. Thank you Robin for your inspiration and sageness on The Mirror#1, Bubba, Hollie’s Song, Coming Into The Rain, Pooped On My Polo and Mother In You.

At this point Robin’s schedule became so harried that I decided to get help from my old writing partner Blair Hardman. The man who is Zone Recording, helped me by listening to those songs from before, and the new ones I had written alone, and giving his critiques and tutelage. I wrote and rewrote nearly every song multiple times and would sing them for Blair until we both felt we had captured the story I wanted to tell.

Bill Horvitz played all of the guitar stuff that was beyond strumming. I did the simple strumming. Bill sang harmony, made up his own harmonies and wrote his own guitar solos where he thought solos would be nice. Remember when you here this album that he had to improvise most of everything he did and often was told of a rewrite or a key change while he was tuning up in the studio preparing to record.
